United Sexualities organization will host a
public forum to discuss the results of the elec
tion, particularly the passage of Ballot M ea
sure 36, at 3 p.m. Nov. 20. There has been an
upsurge in student interest as a result of the
election, and the campus group has grown in
membership to almost 30 people. T he PCC
Sylvania Campus also hosts a United Sexuali
ties group.
Sensing fragmentation and disorganization
after the election, the group hopes a discussion
will give participants focus and motivation to
continue their activism. The discussion will he
lcx)sely moderated, and each participant will he
asked to respect time limits for speaking.
Tire forum will be held in Room 301 of the
Student C enter at 705 N. Killingsworth St. For

anti-littering program. She tiled the necessary
paperwork, offered it to he approved by the state
and recruited a team to perform the two “picks”
necessary to qualify an organization or business
to have signs placed on the highway. This time,
plenty of spaces were available.
Former board member Colcen Dotson is
enthusiastic about the cleanup project even
though, she says, “I’ve picked up the most dead
animals.” Crew members have an informal con
test to see who gets the most interesting piece of
litter. Dotson says the winner so far was a “fair
ly unused, bright pink 36C bra." She didn’t say
who found it.
“1 love the road cleanup program,” she says.
“It’s something we can do for the community,"
and she enjoys younger and older members
working together.
A nother board member, Ginny Laterriere,
thinks the project is “a great way to get our name
out, plus do what we can for the community.”
She recalls being told she was too thorough
when she tried to pick up every cigarette butt.

ortland’s chapter of Parents, Families and
Friends of Lesbians and Gays, well known
for its service to area queer citizens and their
families, has taken on a new project.
Look closely some weekends on the two-
mile stretch of Highway 30 (N orth Lombard
Street) between 42nd and 82nd avenues, and
you may see some of familiar faces. They’ll he
the people in orange vests grubbing trash to
help clean up Oregon’s highways. Adopt-a-
Highway signs facing eastbound traffic at 42nd,
and westbound at 82nd, notify drivers that Port
land PFLAG is removing litter from that stretch
of highway.
Former board chairwoman A nn Blair first
suggested involving PFLAG in the Adopt-a-
Highway plan hut was told by the Oregon
Department of Transportation that no allot
ments were available. Difficult issues, like a
series of ballot measures, also caused PFLAG to
set the project aside.
In June 2003, Susie Shepherd, a daughter of
Portland PFLAG co-founders Bill and A nn
Shepherd, attended a meeting to donate her
mother’s gay library to the organization. She
ended up becoming a board member.
Shepherd, who considers littering as offen

a couple of tires and a baby buggy missing a
wheel. O D O T hauls away the litter picked up
by the group. C ontents of the hags go on a con
veyor belt, where plastic, metal and glass are
sorted out for recycling.
Shepherd is delighted with the results. “Real
Oregonians pick up litter,” she says.
P ride N orthwest S eeks
T heme for P ride 2005
n light of election year losses— and wins— for
the queer community, Pride Northwest seeks
a theme for the 2005 Pride celebration.
The nonprofit organization, which produces
the annual queer festival and parade, seeks a
theme that will express the community’s wide-
ranging feelings and actions for the coming year.
Recent themes include "Bridges of Pride,”
“Queer We G o Again," “O n a Queer D ay...”
and “Lions and Tigers and Queers, O h My!”
A brunch or dinner cruise for two on the
Portland Spirit will he awarded to the person
who submits the chosen suggestion. Submit
