H
ate crimes legislation proposed by U.S.
Sens. Gordon Sm ith, R-Ore., and
Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., was removed from
the Defense Department authorization hill
Oct. 7.
In July, the Senate passed the measure with
a vote of 65-33 as an amendment to the hill.
Through a procedural vote in September, the
House voted in favor of keeping the hate
crimes measure in the defense hill by a biparti
san vote of 213-186.
“Broad bipartisan support for this hill didn’t
stop the House G O P leadership from ensuring
its demise,” said Cheryl Jacques, Human
Rights Campaign president. “It’s just five days
away from the anniversary of Matthew Shep
ard’s death, and another year will go by with
out adequate hate crimes protections. T hat’s
shameful. Even worse are the political motives
behind it. Instead of promoting hate crimes
protections, the president is promoting dis
crimination. Voters will remember that on
Nov. 2.”
“We thank Sens. Kennedy and Smith for
their leadership on this important measure,”
Jacques added.

queer candidates for public office, launched a

The ad depicts Victory Fund endorsees and
elected officials proclaiming “The Class Nom
inated Most Likely to Fight for Your Equal
Rights.” Readers are reminded that the queer
vote is not only critical in the presidential
election, but is incredibly important to queer
candidates running in these states and across
the country.
