f appropriation of Indian
“exotic” bric-a-brac gets you
down (think 11-year-old
white girls wearing stick-on
Bhindis from Lloyd C enter),
then tune your ears and your
palate to the real deal. Port
land has become a virtual
mecca for authentic South
Asian food...and now
dance. Hip-hop-infused
Bhangra tunes are all the rage at queer-friendly
dance clubs like T he Fez, Panorama and
Holocene. N o matter your nationality, why not
make an evening of it and steep yourself in
Indian culture? After dining at one of these
delicious masala havens, you’ll feel like dancing
in the rain in your sari like a giddy Punjabi
bride-to-be....

India Grill • 2924 E. Burnside S t
ituated in the dyke-happy enclave of inner
Southeast Burnside, this simple Indian fare
is an inexpensive alternative to the pomp
of 28th Avenue. N ot only has India Grill host
ed a fan appreciation dinner for a local celebri
ty drag king, their chicken tikka masala will
make any chick smile. Except if she’s the vege
tarian sort, in which case she should try the
savory spinachy palak paneer or hearty potato
alu gobi, either of which have enough spice to
keep the evening interesting.

n old standby just a hop, skip and a jump
from the Burnside Triangle, India House is
just consistently g(x>d food. I’m a sucker for
palak paneer, as you may notice, and India
House’s mild, creamy version holds much
appeal— as does the malai kofta or vegetarian
“meatballs,” in a rich tomatoey sauce. A nice
selection of Northwest wines adds regional
flair. T he samosas here are perhaps not the
freshest, so start your meal with veggie pakoras.
And, downtowners, if you haven’t tried their
lunch buffet, you are missing out on an incredi
ble $6 curry feast.

Prívale Parlies
here’s a reason why this Victorian-housed
Northwest fixture has won so many awards:
It truly is in a class all its own and worth
every extra penny. Plainfields’ palak paneer—
with just-picked, coarsely chopped seasonal
greens and mushrooms and exquisite hom e
made traditional cheese— bears little resem
blance to the soupy mush you get at some
places. T he moogvada ki bhaji, mung bean
dumplings in a fragrant gravy, will make your
taste buds dimple with delight. Everything here
is super fresh and perfectly cooked. Even the
cucumber raita tastes like a delicacy. O n a spe
cial date? Splurge on some aged madeira for
dessert, along with rose cardamom ice cream.
