hen Calendula first opened, some of my
vegetarian friends complained that it
was too expensive. 1 beg to differ! Sure,
I’m used to $7 plates of ncxxlles and veggies at
some satisfying yet decidedly inelegant eateries,
hut for double the price, you bet I’m happy to
savor the fine atmosphere and even finer
cooking at this Victorian home turned vegan
haven. The roasted beet and arugula salad
was enough for two, both in flavor and size.
My partner-in-dinc devoured his seitan and
root veggie shepherds pie, while 1 made short
order of the French-inspired winter squash
filo “purse” and cannellini bean ragout. The
wine, candlelit elegance and service were
superb as well.

hormone-laced milk and mercury-ridden
fish have got you down, there is still
hope for your palate. Do as the herbivores do
and go vegan. Most restaurants offer vegetarian
options these days, and two new additions to
the Portland restaurant scene feature almost
entirely vegan menus. So whether you want to
dine in style, grab a late-night bite or fight the
crowd for cheap falafel, you can do so “sans
cow” in several scrumptious ways.

alga, take me away! Hipper than hath
suds, Kalga is an escape from the ordinary
and sure to soothe your nerves. T he Indi
an- and Asian-inspired decor and menu lend
a certain spicy zen-ness to one’s evening.
Everything is fresh and wholesome here, and
a great tea and wine list makes Kalga a place
to linger. The special Pad Thai I tried was a
delicious mound fit for four kings. I wouldn’t
send someone here for authentic Indian or
Thai food, hut the alternative menu is
refreshing in this Northwest blue-cheese-and-
hazelnut-drenched town.

icholas’ is no newbie on the veggie block,
nor is it exclusively vegetarian. Bur this
m queer-friendly, all-ages, busy-all-the-time-
nook is worth spotlighting as a vegan sanctuary.
(O f course, the problem is it’s been discovered
by everyone from the suits to the dred-heads.)
The falafel here is like a religious experience, as
are the various mezza platters with tabouli,
mini pizzas, baba ganouj, hummus and what
should he world-famous fresh-baked pita bread
served still puffed with hot air. They serve no
alcohol, but who needs it? Clearly, this Muslim-
run establishment knows something about
other gustatory intoxicants.
