Gordon Smith, who recently sponsored
legislation that would make HIV-

Anderson, National Association of
People with AIDS executive director,
thanked the Oregon Republican for his
advocacy but reminded the audience to
hold all politicians accountable.
“We have to ask, ‘If a country can
spend $170 billion conducting a war,
what is it willing to spend on a disease
that kills 8,000 people every day?’ ” he
said. “If Saddam Hussein or Osama
bin Laden was killing 8,000 people
around the world every day, nobody
would sit still for it. But the fact is that
in this country and abroad.. .most of the peo
ple who are dying of HIV and AIDS are poor
people [and] people of color.”

Feb. 12 to hear the latest updates on a pro
posed queer community center.
Portland is one of the largest metropolitan
areas in the"United States without such a facili
ty. Four years ago the ball got rolling on how the
Rose City can remedy this.
Last year the LGBTQ Community Center
Fund was established as a nonprofit organization
and 1,600 queers were surveyed for their opin
ions. “We’ve really moved a long way in a year’s
time,” board member John Coomler said.
Still, organizers are far from breaking ground.
Board co-chairman David Martinez told the
forum audience that the goal is to create a
strategic and thoughtful process to ensure that
the center is “something that would be support
ed by the entire community.”
The fund’s next step is to conduct a survey
of organizations— the Sexual Minority Youth
Resource Center, Cascade AIDS Project,
Basic Rights Oregon and dozens of others—
that might be interested in moving into the
center. “It’s important to hear from those
groups out there...whether it’s something that

fits the kind of work that they’re doing,” Mar

The forum also gave people an opportunity
to envision what the community center should
look like. Some suggested colors (bright, laven
der, pink, rainbows, murals), while others
emphasized shapes (a round structure to encour
age unity); an architect requested that the build
ing be sustainable. Board member Kaelin Bow
ers, who is also active with Basic Rights Ore
gon’s Trans Advisory Group, quipped, “As long
as there’s more than red, white and blue, I’m OK
with it.”
