see that acceptance and understanding grow in
the black community, too.
“There’s a stigma around being gay in the
black community,” Jones says. “I’m not sure how
to change it.”

ride at Work Oregon, an AFL-CIO affiliate
that connects the queer and workers’ rights
movements, is showing the acclaimed docu
mentary Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard
Rustin in honor of Black History Month. The
free screening will start 6:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at the
Communications Workers of America Hall,
2950 S.E. Stark St.
Rustin was an African American who helped
organize the 1963 March on Washington,
worked closely the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
and advanced civil, queer and workers’ rights.
Despite these achievements, he was silenced,
threatened, arrested, beaten, imprisoned and
fired from important leadership positions, large
ly because he was an openly gay man in a fierce
ly homophobic era.

ayor Vera Katz announced last month that
former state Rep. Gail Shibley, who
became Oregon’s first openly gay elected official
in the 1980s, has been appointed to the Port
land Planning Commission. The commission
advises the City Council on any proposals that
affect the goals, policies or contents of the Port
land Comprehensive Plan and on amendments
to the Portland Zoning G xle, urban renewal
plans, city capital improvements and street
vacations, dedications and name change
requests.
Shibley has worked since February as an
administrator for the state Office o f Public
H ealth System s, leading O regon’s public
health efforts, including assuring safety of
drinking water, food, radiation sources, emer
gency medical services and health care facili
ties. She previously served as a state represen
tative from 1991 to 1997, ran as a candidate
for Portland City Council in 1996 and wofked
as a program manager for the city’s Bureau of
Traffic Management from 1990 to 1996. J H

of 14, he will speak about his own experiences
as well as influential A frican A m erican
queers in history and media portrayal of black
gays and lesbians.
Jones said his coming-out process went rela
tively smoothly. (“My mom took it OK, and 1
didn’t lose any friends.” ) But he didn’t find
much of a black gay community in his home
town of Sacramento, Calif. He began volunteer
ing at a community center and went on to co
found the Gay Straight Alliance at his high
school.
“1 didn’t see a lot of black gays fighting for
gay rights,” Jones told Just Out. “So I wanted to
be that visible presence.”
Jones hopes that talking to groups like
PFLAG will help foster more acceptance and
