A study conducted
in 18 cities including
Portland indicates
women with HIV are
dying faster than men with HIV. T he study doesn’t
know why this is happening hut speculates that
women may he waiting longer before seeking treat
ment. A nother study shows that 30 percent of
1,600 gay and hi men in Portland are engaging in
“extremely high-risk sex on a regular basis—
despite the millions of dollars that have been
poured into safe-sex education campaigns."
T h e good news is that H IV /A ID S organi
zations in th e Portland area receive $1.5 m il
lion from 1995 Ryan W hite C om prehensive
A ID S Resources Em ergency Title I grants.
T he had news is th a t Portland qualified for
the m oney after reporting 2,000 or more

“W e’ve got more OCA-hacked legislators in office. Tire Republicans control the entire Legisla
ture. There are lots of reasons to he wary,” state Rep. Gail Shihley tells Just Out. Ironically, it’s
Democratic state Rep. Kevin M annix who sponsors House Rill 2317, stating that Oregon should
“favor" heterosexual marriages. Tire possibility that Hawaii may allow same-sex marriages causes
other states to take “preventative measures." Tire hill dies early in the legislative process.
“Our goal is to out-educate, out-organize and out-vote the O C A ,” comments Basic flights O re
gon executive director Julie Davis. W hile the O C A is considering another anti-gay ballot measure
for 1996, BRO is thinking about sponsoring a proactive initiative for gay rights. But after a feasi
bility poll returns unfavorable results (those voting against anti-gay measures may not necessarily
vote for pro-gay measures), BRO declines to proceed.
