The NEW Leadership Oregon program will
bold its inaugural session in June 2004 at the Col
lege of Urban and Public Affairs on the PSU cam
pus. About 30 participants will be chosen from col
leges and universities from throughout the state.

avid Lane, a gay man who has served as
Office of N eighborhood Involvem ent
director since 1999, will retire from city govern
m ent, Com m issioner Randy Leonard a n
nounced Sept. 19.
"1 am very disappointed that David is retiring
to the tropical confines of H aw aii...1 cannot
understand why he would chtxrse Hawaii over
me! I will greatly miss Davids leadership, but 1
know he has planned to move to Hawaii for sev
eral years, and the recent birth of his twins sped
up that decision,” Leonard said in a statement.
Lane said he has thoroughly enjoyed working
D
with the commissioner. “I have found his leader
ship refreshing. Randy has listened to neighbors
throughout Portland and is implementing posi
tive changes based on this wide input. He’s been
a joy to work with, and I can honestly say I have
never enjoyed my time at the helm of ONI more
than in the last eight months.”
Leonard has asked Line to continue to work
with him to help complete the transition of
crime prevention services and other projects
under way. Lane is expected to leave the city
sometime this winter.
H ousing H otline
N eeds V olunteers
he Community Alliance of Tenants is look
ing for volunteers to staff its Renters’ Rights
Hotline, which gives callers accurate and detailed
legal information about their rights, practical sug
gestions on how to protect them, compassion and
appropriate referrals. The grassroots organization
counsels dozens of tenants a day, many of whom
are at immediate risk of losing their housing.
According to CAT representative Ari Rap-
kin, a trans activist, this is a great opportunity to
learn about our rights under the law and how to
protect them. Plus, the time commitment is very
small, usually four hours a month.
