Claire has a girlfriend,
Isabelle, who always

Isabelle is a jerk, hut
I’ve kept my feelings to
myself because 1 don’t
want to hurt Claire. But
it becomes harder and
harder to remain silent.
A couple of years
hack, I Knight a new
car after making a little
money in the stock
market. Isabelle told me
I was a Kxirgeois fool and said she
hoped the stock market crashed. (It did,
and I still think it’s her fault.) On anoth
er occasion, when I told Claire and
Isabelle how happy 1 am with my new
girlfriend, Isabelle told me that my rela
tionship is doomed because I didn’t end
my previous relationship “correctly.”
I've held back from telling Claire
that I think she should kick her girl
friend to the curb and get a new one,
hut I’m tempted. Meanwhile, Isabelle
and I are supposed to plan a 40th
birthday party for Claire. The party is
not a surprise, and it was Claire’s idea
that we plan it together. But being
around Isabelle makes me want to
shixit someone or take drugs.
How can 1 get out of this dumb
arrangement without hurting Claire?

The joint party planning is an
unfortunate idea. You may he able to
pull it off if you and Isabelle divide
up the tasks so that you don’t have
to deal with one another. If she, for
example, does the drinks and the
music and you take care of the ftxxJ
and the invitations (which gives you
more control), you probably won’t
need to chat much. Either way, don’t
involve the birthday girl in your dis
agreements. And try not to shoot
anyone.
