David Lomnicki (left, then and now) and Don Edmunds of Portland will mark their 25th
anniversary Sept. 29 by traveling to San Francisco and celebrating together under the stars by
the bay. They met at an American Legion Conference as high school students in the summer
of 1975 and shared interests in politics, tennis and camping. When they moved into a one-
room Portland State University student apartment in 1978, their friendship turned into love.
cation before being allowed into the building.
Meeting in other places should bring more of
the community to the meetings.
A t the last meeting of the roundtable, newly
appointed Assistant C hief Stan Grubbs made the
statement that the bureau values the input of the
roundtable, as it does the other advisory groups.
Yes, some of the meetings are not well attend
ed by the GLBT community, and yes, some of
the meetings are not very substantial and may
seem boring, but in the long run, there have
been many items discussed and many resolutions
accomplished. That is what community policing
is all about: each community working with the
police to resolve issues, to work with each other
for the benefit of the whole community.
Under development at this time is a Web
page for the roundtable. W hen it is finalized, the
address will he publicized.
It would he very helpful if Just Out had a rep
resentative at each meeting with an article in
each edition of the paper about the roundtable.
There needs to he more involvement by other
members of the community.

Don't throw in the towel
To the E ditor :
s the Portland Police Bureau bias crime
detective, 1 differ with the commentary
Marty Davis wrote Sept. 5 in which she ques
tioned the viability of the Sexual Minority
Roundtable. As a member of the roundtable, I
would agree we are not perfect hut would add
that we are not a waste of time nor should we he
disbanded. Let me explain.
There is no other venue in which I would
have made contacts who I have found valuable in
my investigations. Members have assisted my
efforts by referring victims to my office and giving
information on investigations and have often
times encouraged investigations and prosecutions.
W here else would 1 he afforded the opportu
nity to associate with members of the com m uni
ty? W here else could I build the trust needed to
investigate crimes associated with the gay com
munity ? Simply showing up to a crime scene and
introducing myself as the bias crime detective
doesn’t cut it.
It is valuable to have contacts who can intro
duce me or at least vouch for the fact that 1 take
these crimes seriously and always keep the vic
tims’ circumstances at the forefront. Through
my associations at the roundtable 1 have had the

opportunity to address numerous groups includ
ing Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians
and Gays; youth organizations; and law enforce
ment personnel.
T he roundtable does lack in certain areas.
We do not have gay youth representation. Hav
ing new members of the entire community
would also provide new ideas and resources.
L3on’t "throw in the towel.” How would giv
ing up help anyone?
I am looking forward to meeting more mem
bers of the community. Thanks, and keep up the
gtxxl work.

CONGRATULATIONS
To the E ditor :
ictor Salva is a convicted child molester. He
confessed to five felony counts of sexual rela
tions with a 12-year-old hoy whom he videotaped
in sexual situations in 1988. In 1992 he was paroled
after serving 15 months of a three-year sentence.
This information should provided to readers of Just
Out so that they may decide whether they wish to
support his film Jeepers Creepers 2.
T he current review in the “W hat’s Poppin?”
guide appears to portray both the film and its
director in a gay-positive way [Sept. 5]. In view
of the director’s history and the plotline of the
film (male-monster devours boys), the review
should be reconsidered.

oy George has written a brand new musical,
Taboo, that has taken London by storm, and
now his best buddy, Rosie O ’D m nell, is produc
ing the New York premiere Nov. 13 at the Ply
mouth Theatre on Broadway.
W hy haven’t we heard anything of this in
your magazine? After all, isn’t he the biggest pop
gay icon there is? “Boy George is the best role
model" the gay community has now, according
to Rolling Stone magazine.
