From left: Celia Stapleton, Pocket, Stacy Bias and Renee Bianchi are flanked by the Asian
wonders in Stone Buddha
f you’re walking in downtown Silverton and
kx>k at your watch, you might miss it. Stone
Buddha, an Asian import shop with its two
glorious window displays, makes up most of
Silverton’s Chinatown. (The restaurant next
door provides the mxxlles.)
As Norah Jones music belts onto the side
walk and draws in the curious, the nearly 7,(XX)
residents of this town 14 miles east of Salem go
about their daily business. Even though, at first
thought, Silverton would seem an unlikely spot
to find imports from all over Asia, the locals
have embraced this tiny Chinatown since it
opened in the summer of 2002.
Stone Buddha has, indeed, taken the town
by surprise. When lesbians Celia Stapleton and
Renee Bianchi first decided to open the import
store, friends scrunched up their faces. “An
Asian shop in Silverton? Have you lost your
mind?" After opening, strangers from off the
street would whisper, “Are you guys making it?”
under their breaths to the couple, who’ve been
together for more than four years.
Business has taken off, in fact, because
Stone Buddha is unlike other stores in town.
I
Stapleton says it’s “not a hippy-dippy kind of
head shop or a Pier One. It’s really a combina
tion of a lot of things.” All things Asian, any
way, even if the connection to Asia is a stretch.
P
ocket, Stone Buddhas in-house bulldog and
mascot, greets most customers at the dtxtr.
The tear(x>m, encased in bamboo bars, is
the first thing people see; inside it, the walls are
decorated in joss papers— thin, tissuelike papers
burned for ceremonial reasons in China. One
that stands out is the “Hell Bank Note,” which,
Stapleton explains, is burned at the funerals of
relatives to help buy their way out of hell.
The room carries various Tao of Tea flavors
like Green Magnolia, Kukicha and Genmaicha
as well as teatime biscuits and chai. Compli
mentary samples of the day’s highlighted tea
are always brewed and waiting.
The store is full of Asian knickknacks and
other offerings. From Filipino palm mats to
Indian saris to incense to books on yoga, Stone
Buddha has all your Asian needs, even if you
didn’t know you had any.
