Administrators ordered him to remove the
poster from his classroom because they believe
“controversial” subjects belong only in counselor
offices. When he refused, officials cited a new pol
icy that was made without the input of teachers.
Smith cites several ways folks can help him out:
• Write: Letters can he sent to the adminis
tration voicing concern about the new policy.
Write to Superintendent’s Office, Attention:
James Carnes, Beaverton School District,
16550 S.W. Merlo Road, Beaverton, O R 97006.
• Call: 503-591-4401.
• E-mail: Tom_Greene@beavton.kl2.or.us.
• Donate: Smith serves as chairman of the
Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s
Oregon chapter, which needs money to cover
the cost of the posters. Contributions can he
mailed to 27000 S.W . North Dakota St.,
Suite 180 #129, Tigard, O R 97223.
• Meet: Supporters can attend the Beaverton
School Board meeting 7:30 p.m. March 10 at
William Walker Elementary School, 11940 S.W.
Lynnfield Lane. Smith will be distributing copies
of the Washington County Pride Project poster
for teachers to place in more classrooms.
“There is power in numbers,” Smith says.
“We must put an end to this new policy!”
