he sexual minorities community
lost a dear family friend when
A nn Shepherd died of complica
tions from heart disease Jan. 4-
She was 84-
For more than a quarter-century she
served as a mother figure to countless
young people desperately seeking sup
port during their coming-out process.
She and her husband, Bill, founded the
Portland chapter of Parents, Families
and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.
“Many young people started calling
Bill and A nn ‘D ad’ and ‘M om ’ because
they had been kicked out o f their
homes or churches,” their daughter
Susie told Just Out in 1997. “Mom and
Dad couldn’t understand any parent
rejecting his or her own offspring and
proudly watched their fam ily grow
exponentially.”
