O
n the evening of O ct. 26 hundreds of people, mostly queer, will flood the John
Q. Hammons Hall of the Portland Airport Holiday Inn to take part in one of
the oldest forms of fund raising and merry making in the gay, lesbian, bi and
trans community. T h a t’s right, it’s time for Coronation 2002.
During this year’s event, dubbed “Egypt: Adventure in the Valley of Kings
& Queens,” the Imperial Sovereign Rose Court of Portland will bid adieu to one of
the most dynamic and busy Emperor and Empress teams in recent memory and wel
come two uncontested but enthusiastic monarchs to the court.
Uninitiated members of Portland’s queer community may look toward the Rose
Court’s pomp and circumstance with raised eyebrows: modeled after a monarchy, cele
brating the whimsy and camp of drag culture, packed full of people with titles like
“Imperial Minister of Positive and Perky,” “T h e Knight of the Future Yet to Com e”
