regon Secretary of State Bill Bradbury
spoke to a smattering of leaders from the
sexual minorities community June 28, assuring
them about his excellent chances of winning
the U.S. Senate race this fall.
The Democrat is receiving strong monetary
support from party leaders, who consider this to
be a pivotal election. Peter Buttenwieser, Demo
cratic Senatorial Campaign Committee finance
emocratic gubernatorial candidate Ted
Kulongoski has promised to return a
$15,OCX) campaign contribution because the
money was tied to a company that produces gay
adult videos, the Oregonian reported June 26.
Con West Resources Inc., the corporate par
ent of Falcon Studios, was owned by philan
thropist Charles Holmes of San Francisco, who
died in 2000. His friend, longtime gay rights
advocate Terry
Bean, was named
executor of his
estate so he
could continue
giving money to
political
and
social causes.
When
the
pom connection
was brought to
the attention of
Kulongoski, offi
cials immediately
promised to re
turn the contri
bution. However,
campaign manag
er Sean Sinclair
said their deci
sion had nothing
to do with the
donor’s
sexual
orientation.
“The money

one simple rea
son: Ted has been running this campaign on the
issues of education, health care and the environ
ment,” he told Just Out. “We saw this donation as
a potential distraction to getting away from the
issues that Oregon voters care about. And so
instead of making it a distraction in the campaign
we decided to return the check. Ted and Terry
Bean, who it came from, have been friends for
over 30 years. This has nothing to do with Terry;
1 think their friendship is still strong. This just
had to do with us wanting to keep the campaign
on the issues that I think everyone cares about.”
Sinclair noted Kulongoski s longtime support
of gay rights. He was responsible for some of the
country’s first anti-discrimination bills in the
1970s and, as Oregon attorney general, filed a
brief with the U.S. Supreme Court that influ
enced its decision to overturn Colorado’s anti
gay constitutional amendment in 1995.
Bean admitted he disagrees with Kulongos-
ki’s decision but said there are no hard feelings.
When asked when any other campaign has
rejected a ConWest contribution, he replied,
"Not to my recollection.”
“I’m very proud to be Chuck’s executor,”
Bean said. “He was my dear friend and a philan
thropist and cared greatly about the welfare and
safety of G LB T Americans. As far as the return,
it may not have been the decision I would’ve
made in that situation; however, I support Ted
Kulongoski 100 percent.... He continues to be
my very good friend, and I’m going to do every
thing 1 can to get him elected.”
Roey Thorpe, executive director of Basic
Rights Oregon, which accepted a $15,000 Con-
West contribution for 2000’s No on 9 Cam
paign, said she is grateful for Holmes’ estate and
for Bean’s philanthropy. She wondered why the
Oregonian didn’t address donations from the
tobacco industry, pharmaceutical companies
and other questionable sources.
“If Mr. Holmes hadn’t been creating a prod
uct that people enjoyed, he would not have
been such a wealthy man," Thorpe said. “1 don’t
see what the problem is.”
Everyone knows they need a financial plan for the future,
but it’s hard to find time to do it. That’s where I can help.

Bill Bradbury discuss the U.S. Senate race
chairman, explained that Oregon is one of only
a few states with this kind of national interest.
Officials cited polling numbers revealing that
only 35 percent of people who previously voted for
incumbent Republican Gordon Smith have stated
they wish to re-elect him. During the meeting
Bradbury spoke about the top three issues where
he and his opponent’s positions differ: physician-
aided dying, abortion and the environment.
Meanwhile, the candidate is receiving moral
support from Basic Rights Oregon, which
recently endorsed him. Last December Smith
received a controversial thumbs-up from the
Human Rights Campaign because of his advo
cacy for hate crimes legislation and the Employ
ment Non-Discrimination Act.
Bradbury said Oregon Citizens Alliance
chairman Lon Mabon’s entry into the race as the
Oregon Constitution Party nominee both helps
and hurts his candidacy. “It’s very clear to me
that I will not lose one vote to Lon Mabon, so it’s
clear who loses the votes, and that’s Gordon.”
But Bradbury also noted Mabon’s ultra-right
positions make Smith “look more moderate,
even though he votes like a complete Trent Lott
conservative.”

even measures have been filed in Clacka

Jackson and Washington counties aimed at
denying teen-agers’ access to critical family

require parental consent for minors before
receiving all non-emergency county services.
‘These measures are detrimental to the health
and livelihood of Oregon’s teens,” said Caroline
Fitchett, Oregon National Abortion and Repro
