Out and proud
Pride Northwest honors outstanding achievements

E
very year Pride Northwest honors several
individuals and organizations for their out­
standing contributions within the sexual
minorities community.
Consideration for the Spirit of Pride Awards
is based on visibility, volunteerism, leadership
and service to the wider community. This year’s
honorees include two organizations and two
individuals: the Portland Leather Alliance, the
Sweethearts of Portland, Tyler Walker and
Damon Woodcock.
A one-time-only Pride Champion Award
was created to honor Catherine Stauffer. Also
saluted this year is Pride 2002 Grand Marshal
Katie Potter.

he Portland Leather Alliance fosters a pos­
itive community for safe, sane and consen­
sual alternative adult sexualities. The all­
volunteer group of nearly 400 people directs all
profits to charities and causes.
“We are a pansexual organization support­
ing full human rights for all— regardless of.
sexual preference, gender, age, race, religion,
politics, marital status, occupation, nation of
origin, disability or any other designation
which might be used to classify a person,”
says PLA, which will offer a Leather Fantasy
Presentation at 5:45 p.m. June 15 on the
R adosta
Unity Stage. “We believe that personal
choices, such as those involved in mutually
consensual loving and sexuality, deserve
respect and a supportive environment in
which to flourish.”
PLA also organizes several annual events.
The Kinkiest educational conference took
place in March, and Leather Pride Week will
he held Aug. 2 to 11.

he Sweethearts of Portland was estab­
lished in 1989 to raise money for non­
profit organizations and needy individu­
als. Beneficiaries include Our House of Port­
land, Esther’s Pantry, the HIV Day Center,
Cascade A ID S Project, the Princess Diana
Fund, the Tijuana A ID S Foundation and
many other charities.
The Sweethearts meet 6 p.m. on the third
Monday of every month at Embers, 110 N.W.
Broadway. They will perform 3:10 p.m. June 16
on the Triangle Stage.

from Springfield High this month, was
voted Oregon’s best cheerleader two
years in a row. Since coming out of the clos­

The Chorus will present musical works by well-known gay
composers including Bernstein, Handel, Schubert, Foster,
Copland, Bourland and Porter. In addition to these favor­
ites, PGMC will also reprise its landmark 20,h anniversary
song cycle Millennium Mosaic”. This work focuses on the
lives of our G LB T youth and their view of the society they
come from, are living in and the future they are headed to­
