ast month the National Gay and Lesbian
Task Force announced the appointment of
four co-chairs to lead the Creating Change 2002
Host Committee: trans activist Lori Buckwalter,
community organizer Ron Glanville, health
educator Anisah Miley and Brother to Brother
hoard member and ordained minister Cecil
Prescod.
The 15-year-old conference attracts about
2,500 participants and is the largest annual
gathering of the queer movement. This year,
Creating Change will he held from Nov. 6 to 10
at the Doubletree Jantzen Beach— the first time
it has taken place in the Pacific Northwest.
The conference will focus on the effect of
racism in society and in queer politics. A nti
racism trainings and action sessions will he
offered throughout the gathering along with
more than 100 panels on a wide array of topics,
touching on every aspect of the movement.
“We are extremely grateful that Anisah,
Ron, Lori and Cecil have agreed to give their
time and talents to help us make this 15th Cre
ating Change conference the best ever,” said
Lorri L. Jean, NGLTF executive director. “We
look forward to working with them and the hun
dreds of local volunteers who each year make
Creating Change a success.”

he first nationally distributed and user-
friendly brochure for lesbian and bi
female victims of domestic violence soon will
he available.
This is being made possible by the award of
an $820 grant June 5 by the Portland General
Electric Foundation and the Open Meadow
Corps Restoring the Urban Environment Pro
gram. The funds will he used to design, write,
print, distribute and publicize the availability of
the brochure.
Are You or Someone You C are About a Female
Victim o f Female Intimate Partner Violence? is
being compiled by Stop Abuse for Everyone,
which distributes the only nationally available
brochure for male victims of domestic vio
lence. It will he dedicated to the memory of
Cornelius resident Carall Smith, 53, who was
shot to death by her female partner Nov. 17,
1995.
“T h e new brochure will enhance our
efforts to help all underserved victims of
domestic violence,” SA FE president Jade
Ruhick said. “We are very grateful to the Port
land General Electric Foundation and appre
ciate their support.”
Most research has shown that domestic
violence within lesbian relationships occurs
at a similar rate to that o f straight couples.
Even in studies that show a lower rate com
pared to heterosexuals, the amount of abuse is
significant, with 11 percent of same-sex
cohahitating women reporting being victim
ized by a female partner in their lifetime,
according to the National Violence Against
Women A ct Survey,
“Many lesbians are understandably reluc
tant to air issues related to lesbian battering
for fear of triggering homophobic attacks on
our communities,” editor Kerry Lobel wrote in
the book Naming the Violence: Speaking Out
About Lesbian Violence. “Yet, our only alterna
tive is one of silence, a silence that traps bat
tered lesbians into believing that they are
alone and that there are no resources available
to them.”
