In the Life airs M ay 21 on O P B . The
show's theme, “Building Safe Havens,”
focuses on the effort individuals and organiza
tions are making in building support networks
for gay men and lesbians, including topics of
domestic abuse, invasion o f privacy and living
with A ID S.
“Harmful Pursuit" reports on incidents of
discrimination in the armed forces. The num
ber of military personnel being discharged for
allegedly being queer is at an alarming rate of
three people a day, according to the military’s
own estimates, despite adoption of the “don’t
ask, don’t tell” policy.
“When Abase Hits Home” studies the 20
percent of gay and lesbian relationships in
which domestic violence occurs. Interviewed is
Rachel Baum, who claims “the incidents of
domestic violence in the queer community are
parallel to the incidents o f domestic violence
in the straight community."
In “Common Threads,” In the Life visits the
New York Youth Empowerment Program,
which provides an opportunity for straight and
gay youth to participate in a weekend retreat
focusing on increasing safety and respect in
their schools and communities.
