ix Portlanders traveled to San Francisco this
month for the Northwest meeting of the
National Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual
and Transgender Community Centers. Holly
Daigle, Barbara Turrill, Angie Jones and Erin
Sexton of the Lesbian Community Project met
up with Molly Franks and Jaimee Caruso of
Vanguard Youth Services for the two-day con
ference featuring community center advocates,
directors and supporters from cities including
Seattle and San Jose, Areata and C hico, Calif.
T he meeting was held at the new $15.5 mil
lion Charles M. Holmes Campus at the Center,
San Francisco’s new queer community center. A
renovated 1908 building and a new structure
come together to form 40,000 square feet of
state-of-the-art community space for the city’s
sexual minorities population.
Organized by the Billy De Frank Lesbian and
Gay Community Center of San Jose, the confer
ence featured two intensive workshops on fund
raising from major donor sources and strategic
planning. Participants were able to quiz financiers
on everything from how they prefer to be
approached for a significant contribution to how
they like to be recognized for their involvement.
T he association also gave a presentation on
its anti-tobacco programming featuring the one-
woman powerhouse behind Seattle’s Gay Amer
ican Smoke Out, Elise Lindborg. Aside from
learning about the sexual minorities communi
ty’s high incidence of smoking, the group learned
how to bring her event to their hometown.
Althixjgh Portland sexual minorities have had
many a dialogue about a community center, so far
nothing has materialized. The conference partici
pants hope to change that: LCP is looking for a new
office and hopes to collaborate with other (Organiza
tions to find a space that could be a precursor to the
Rose City’s own queer community center.

wear demonstration and an awards ceremony

“Now is the ideal time for women to learn
about high-paying trades careers,” said Connie
Ashbrook, O regon Tradeswomen executive
director. “T h e opportunities are only going to
get better from here. There will be a growing
demand for skilled workers as older workers
retire.”
T h e fair began in 1992 as a one-day event for
100 women and has become a three-day extrav
aganza for more than 1,500 people. T h e first two
days— May 16 and 17— were dedicated to mid
dle and high school students.

with breast cancer. T h e A m erican C a n
cer Society is hopeful that thousands o f peo
ple will gather May 19 at Southw est Port
land’s W illam ette Park to help reduce this
statistic.
This is the first year that the Making Strides
Against Breast C ancer Five-Mile Walk will be
held in Portland or the Pacific Northwest. Since
1993, it has raised awareness and dollars in 48
other U .S. cities.
“Making Strides Against Breast C ancer is an
event geared to the entire family— giving every
one a chance to help fight hreast cancer," coor
dinator Rachel Verdick explained. “There is no
preregistration nor are there registration fees.
Participants simply arrive, register at the event
and bring their pledges with them .”
