The Laramie Project
Artists Repertory Theatre introduces the people of Laramie to Portland
by Christopher McQuain
fter the brutal, gay'bashing murder of
Matthew Shepard in October 1998
outside Laramie, Wyo., the national
news media swooped in to get the story.
Matthew Shepard is now a household name, a
nationally and even internationally recognized
reminder that the threat of homophobic violence—
reactionary homophobic violence—is a real issue for
the sexual minorities community.
Now the trial is over and the media focus has
shifted, Shepard s mother is MTV’s spokeswoman
for tolerance, and his story has been written into
teleplays. But the people of Laramie are still there.
