bout 700 people attended the second annu
al Against Patriarchy Conference from
Jan. 25 to 27 at University of Oregon in Eugene.
The gathering’s mission statement was
strong: “A movement towards the elim ina
tion of male privilege, domination and sex
ism. Striving to create dialogue, educate our
selves and each other and inspire action.”
The conference intended to answer ques
tions such as: “What is patriarchy, and how does
it affect each of us.? What does it mean to he a
man or woman in this culture, and how does
this gender polarization limit us?”
Workshops were offered on topics such as
“Sissies, Bois and Fairies: Rejecting Masculini
ty,” “Anarchism and Feminism,” “ Interrupting
Sexism ,” “Witchcraft and Herstory,” “Is Inter
sex Part of Transgender?” and “Radical Fairies
Subverting Patriarchy.” National Poetry Slam
Champion Alix Olson rocked the house with
her hard-hitting, honest, animated prose.
The conference also featured keynote speak
er Leslie Feinberg, who addressed and motivated
a packed nxim. She spoke about the importance
of building solidarity: “We may not all have the
same objective, hut we all have the same enemy,
and we need to build alliances.”
The crowd was diverse, including everyone
from trans punks to middle-aged earthmama les
bians, from college kids to sensitive, conscious
men wanting to dismantle patriarchy’s brain
washing. The entire conference was free, and
meals were prepared hy FixxJ Not Bombs.
The gathering was held to get communica
tion flowing and open people’s minds to other
ways of perceiving the patriarchal reality they

raising $1,500 for BRO or conducting 20 one-
on-one meetings with unknown community

will hold a training for teachers on sexual
minority issues Feb. 14 in Eugene. Past pre

Organizers already are in touch with a number
of lesbian mothers about their and their children’s
experiences. However, they have not heard from
local gay fathers of school-age kids.
