obert Ball, G ood Governm ent Initiative
chief petitioner, delivered 40,000 signa
tures to Portland’s elections office Jan. 17. If
they are verified, voters will decide in May
whether to amend the city charter to include
district representation and a system o f checks
and balances.
“T he support by leaders representing
neighborhoods, business, union and comm u
nity groups for our initiative has been truly
fantastic,” says Ball, a gay police reserve cap
tain and real estate investor. “When officials
are elected from districts and have offices in
their districts, they will know more about the
specific needs and very real concerns of that
part of town.”
