the organizers take. For example, the panel of
experts will include not only a physician but
also porn star M ichael Brandon ( The Slutty
Professor, The Hard Eight).
“We don’t preach at gay men about what
they choose to do,” Beardsley says. “It’s just an
opportunity to come together and talk about the
place that oral sex has in our lives.”
More than 500 people packed into the
Grand Ballroom at PSU ’s Smith Memorial C en
ter for “Tunnel of Love.” Beardsley expects a
capacity crowd this time around, too.
“We certainly design our events to engage
our target audience, which is gay men,” he says.
“One of the things that has hampered HIV pre
vention is concerns about explicit discussions
about sexuality.”
O f course, such frank forums often can lead
to trouble with conservative bigots. In Septem
ber 2000 Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist
Church in Topeka, Kan., came to town partial
ly in response to “Tunnel of Love.”
“Our focus is getting information to gay men,
and we know how to do that,” Beardsley said. “I’m
not gonna let Lon Mahon keep gay men from
having the information they need to stay safe.”

controversy in June when it part
nered with triangle productions!

E
ric Brown, a district manager and financial
adviser for Waddell & Reed, received the
company’s Crest Award for work with his clients
during a June conference in San Francisco. The
honor was given this year to the top 139 finan
cial advisers nationally.
This is the second year Brown has received
the award as an adviser. He has received recog
nition for his efforts in planning since 1995.
Brown, who addressed a Waddell & Reed
conference in February on how to manage
advisers while successfully meeting client needs,
also was given an Honor Award for his work as
a manager. Only 60 people nationwide qualified
for the recognition, national sales manager Bob
Williams said.
Brown recently joined the Multnomah
County Advocacy Team for Sexual Minority
Youth. He also is a member of the Portland Area
Business Association. i n
