eight local teams playing in the tournament,
which features 34 teams from across the West
and Midwest region, including 15 from Seattle,
at the new Hillsboro Stadium Complex. Each
team will play four or five games, so there will
be plenty of action to watch.
Games start both days at 8 a.m., and the
championship games start at 2 p.m. July 8.
And here’s some good news: There’s no charge
to get into the stadium.
You’ll find the complex at Northwest
Evergreen Parkway at 229th Avenue, just
off Sunset Highway. Learn more at

f you care more about the players than the
game, you probably will find most of them
at the Bases Loaded Party on July 7. This
progressive party starts 3 p.m. at C.C.

icture this: More than 500 huff softball
players from throughout the country
will be in town July 7 and 8 for the
Cascade Cup.
This is the 20th anniversary of the tourna
ment, which is sponsored by Ringor, a Portland
company that makes softball shoes. It donated
$3,500 to present the event, which alternates
between Seattle and Portland.
Competing will be teams of all men, some
mixed-gender teams and one all-women team
from Vancouver, British Columbia.
Roy Melani, Rose City Softball Association
commissioner, says he sees putting on this tourna
ment “as sort of a
practice run for
the World Series,
which will be
held here in
August 2002.”
He also is thrilled
that lots of spon

He adds that half
of the needed
sponsors for the
World Series
already have
been secured.
