he theme of Pride 2001, “Bridges
of Pride,” was exemplified in the
tremendous diversity demonstrated
by the array of performers on two stages,
by the many groups who set up booths and
by the long and winding parade.
In fact, the queerific extravaganza
boasted the largest Pride parade in Port
land history. More than 120 groups
danced, flaunted and stripteased their way
through downtown for more than 2 1/2
hours June 17.
The annual Grudge Match fund-raiser
between Rose City Softball Association
players and Portland Police Bureau officers
was held June 16 at Lents Park. Once
again, the queer team came out on top!
Pride Northwest board secretary Rich
Kibbons was delighted with this year’s
turnout. “Ten of us organized the party,
and 50,000 showed up,” he cheerfully
remarked.
Linda Williams, another board member
and festival chair, added: “The festival was
the biggest it’s ever been—definitely the
best event we’ve ever had. The reaction
has been totally positive.”
And best of all, nary a drop of rain fell!
