aimed at raising awareness and com m itm ent to
th e foundation in the Eugene area.
T h e foundation will m atch contributions
made to the new fund, dollar for dollar, up to
$5,000. T h e money collected will he used to fund
nonprofit organizations throughout L in e County.
T h e p roject’s steering com m ittee, com posed
o f residents and m embers o f the foundation’s
grants com m ittee, will work to increase volun-
tcerism and donor participation in the area.

quality grant applications that are subm itted to
the foundation from Lane County.

T h e roundtable has been grappling with the
issue, and what its role should be, since tapes were
discovered last fall that contained Kroeker’s dis
paraging com m ents about gays. M any in the
com m unity felt the com m ents weakened the
police bureau’s relationship with the gay com m u
nity. T h e roundtable has com missioned itself to
assist the chief, the bureau and the sexual m inori
ties com m unity in rebuilding that relationship.
A special com m ittee o f th e roundtable has
spent weeks paring down a list o f suggestions
and com m ents made during a D ecem ber co m
m unity m eeting w hen Kroeker faced the sexual
m inorities com m unity.
T h e letter will ask for Katz’s endorsem ent o f
the recom m endations and recom m end the ideas
be incorporated into a w ritten 12-m onth plan.
C om m ittee mem bers believe a w ritten plan will
help improve accountability and solidify the
desire o f the bureau and the gay com m unity to
work together.
T h e letter requests that a plan be com pleted
w ithin six m onths. D etails o f the final recom
m endations will not be made public until the
letter is presented to Katz.
