ine revolutionary approaches to male nude
photography, which is such a visual art
mainstay. As society continues to struggle
with sexual and gender issues, it thrills me
to see the male form presented from fresh
angles. G iven that Exposed also covers pho
tography from 1850 to the present day, it
gives us the opportunity to see how far
we’ve come.

F orms of D esire
by Doris Kloster. St. Martin's Griffin, 2000;
$24.95 softcover.
oris Kloster is a New York photographer
who explores the full range of female sexu
al expression in her work, with an empha
sis on the farther edges behavior. Many of these
black and white photos portray fetish attire and
S/M activities, while many others explore gen
der-bending role-playing.

t seems easier to experience some of
the photographs featured in Exposed as
studies in form, light and composition,
while others force me to react purely to
content. Mostly, l think this is because of
the general aversion society has to the
sight of a penis—especially an erect penis.
The photos in this book feature male
genitalia both flaccid and hard, being
fondled, tied up, exploding with semen
and draped with sheer wet cloths to
make insightful observations about the
male body. This strikes me as a way in
which photographers are able to chal
lenge perceptions of how nude men
have been depicted in the past.
The biggest thrill l get with the pub
lication of new collections is to exam-

A whole lot of fun is had with dildos,
under clothing and out and about. Most of
the women are
white, but the
author has
made an effort
to include a
few women of
color and a few
who weigh in
above the tra
ditional
model’s fly
weight.
A lot of the
images are fan
tasy scenes, and
there are a few overt lesbian shots. These wo
men are surely sexual, and if they strike some
viewers as objectified, at least it’s from a
woman’s point of view.
As Pat Califia says in her introduction,
“Whether you feel attraction or repulsion,
your response to Kloster’s work can be seen
as an oracle, speaking to you of the forms of
your own desires.” In other words, take a
gander— maybe you’ll discover you’re less
vanilla than you teared!
