T he Sexual Minorities Roundtable listens to community suggestions during a meeting March 3
er and the bureau’s commissioner, Mayor Vera
Katz. A list of the community’s ideas will be
presented during the April 10 meeting.
Another topic of discussion was the Rain­
bow Community Foot Patrol. Assistant Chief
Mark Paresi said the group is busy surveying
downtown businesses and working out the
details. The. foot patrol should be under way
before the Rose Festival in early June.
The group will patrol the Stark Street area,
which is frequented by sexual minorities, and
streets in Old Town. Members are working with
the Lents and Downtown Neighborhood Asso­
ciations to launch the patrol.

his decision after reviewing written closing argu­
ments sometime after March 16.

Socialites are looking for someone to take
over the management of the group.
M ichael A udette has been organizing,
planning events and maintaining the m onth­
ly newsletter for five years. T h e organization,
a social group that meets for a variety o f activ­
ities, has become too much for one person to
manage, he says.

The honor is presented to an individual who
directly aids the community in promoting the
community policing effort in a distinctive way.
According to a letter written by Chief Mark
Kroeker, Costa’s name was submitted for the
award by Tom Johnston and Roni Lang “for your
hard work and involvement with the sexual
minority community and the bureau.”

G rapples with P lan
he Sexual Minorities Roundtable still is
struggling through with its plan to help
Portland Police C hief Mark Kroeker rebuild his
relationship with the gay community, tom apart
by the discovery of tapes that contained his dis­
paraging comments about homosexuality.
During the quarterly community meeting
March 3, attendees participated in the process,
providing suggestions for the chief. T h e round­
table hopes to compile a list of ideas and later
an action plan that will be presented to Kroek­

lesbian-feminist bookstore in Eugene will
play host to an upcoming panel titled
“Real Life: Young Women Speak Out About
Homelessness.”
The presentation will begin 7 p.m. March 21
ar Mother Kali’s, 720 E. 13th Ave. The young
women, who were contacted by the Looking
Glass New Roads program, will spend some time
sharing their personal stories, experiences, prob­
lems and solutions about being young, female
and homeless, then address questions from and
lead discussion with the audience.
“T h e population of homeless young women
is growing and can be expected to continue to
grow in Eugene and elsewhere,” said Tova
Stabin , M other K ali’s Books co-manager.
“These young women have unique lives,
knowledge and strong voices that all should be
listening to.”
This program is part of Mother Kali’s Inter­
national Women’s Day and Women’s History
Month Series 2001, which continues through
May 1. The event is free and open to all. JH
