he Columbia River Gorge, with the
city of Hood River at its center, is
known around the world for its
beauty, clean air, apples and, of
course, windsurfing. But locals say most
Portlanders have no idea what they are
missing less than an hour east of town.
“ It’s the best-kept secret in the entire
Northwest,” one lesbian transplant says.
Life might move slower out in the
Gorge, but the region has experienced
fast change during the past decade. A
sort of renaissance has been taking place
the Columbia Qorge
ever since Hcxxl River hit the interna­
tional windsurfing scene, brought on hy
newcomers in the region from every cor­
ner of the country and many parts of the
world.
Not only are athletes making the
Hood River area their new home,
Hollywood types, artists from New York
and high-tech entrepreneurs who
telecommute have moved in. Others
have brought their trust funds along with
their Range Rovers, buying up property
and helping housing costs in the area
skyrocket.
