T
he Portland Women’s Crisis Line needs
volunteers.
Training for sexual assault advocates and
24-hour crisis line advocates will begin
Jan. 10. The program will include 42 hours of
training.
After completing that, volunteers will work
for 16 hours a month. Shifts usually are four
hours; some people volunteer overnight for
eight hours. A six-month commitment is
required.
The organization says minorities and bilin
gual and bicultural volunteers are especially wel
come. The line provides support for a significant
number of bilingual callers, most often Spanish
speaking females.
In addition to crisis line and sexual assault
advocates, volunteers are used for community
outreach, support group facilitation and court
room advocacy as well as in the elder abuse pro
gram. Although females staff the crisis line, the
organization does utilize male volunteers in
other capacities.

workshop will be held Jan. 21 for a foot
patrol forming to help police keep an eye
on two downtown Portland neighborhoods fre
quented by sexual minorities.
The Rainbow Community Foot Patrol will
start training volunteers 9:15 a.m. in the
main meeting room at Multnomah County’s
Central Library, 801 S.W. 10th Ave. Registra
tion is not required to attend the two-hour
gathering.
Co-chairs Dana Roselund and Pam Monette
are working on recruiting volunteers who want
to participate in the foot patrol and make a dif
ference in neighborhoods and parks. They say
they have extensive experience recruiting and
training security team volunteers for Portlands
annual pride festival.
More than 50 volunteers provided security
for last years event. They are hoping some of
those people will he interested in participating.
The foot patrol is a good way to get
involved in the community to be a part of the
solution, Roselund and Monette say. The only
requirement is that volunteers must he at least
18 years old.
The program needs 12 volunteers— two
groups of six— to get it started, Roselund says.
Five people were signed up at press time.

Roselund says the group
likely will hit the streets
the first weekend of
spring break in mid-
March. The foot patrol
initially will focus on
the hours between
9:30 p.m. and 2:30 a.m.
on weekends.
In the meantime,
Roselund says she and
Monette are looking for
businesses to help spon
sor the effort. They also
will sit down with entre
preneurs in the areas
affected and seek feed
back to help strategize
what needs to he done,
where it needs to hap
pen and when.
Foot
patrols
in
Northeast Portland and
St. Johns have proven
successful in deterring
criminal and harass
ment incidents. Mem
bers are respected and
appreciated by district officers, according to
the Portland Police Bureau’s Sexual Minorities
Roundtable.
The foot patrol’s mission is to observe, take
notes and make reports. Members do not get
involved in any incidents.
