< his year, give the gift that keeps on grow
ing: Plant a tree in honor of your loved
ones, and help enhance the beauty and
health of Portland. Friends of Trees will plant a
tree in honor of your friends, loved ones or
family members when you participate in the
Commemorative Tree program.
For a contribution of $25 to $49, they’ll plant
a seedling tree and, if you like, send a card to the
person you designate. When you contribute $50
or more, they’ll plant a grove of six seedlings and
send a certificate suitable for framing.
And, for even more fun, you and your friends
are welcome to participate in the Commemora
tive Tree planting experience. Trees may be pur
chased by calling 503-282-8846, ext. 17.

by Rebecca Chalker. Seven Stories Press, 2000;
$19.95 hardcover.
ou say cliTORis, I say CLIToris, let’s all say
clitoris, rah, rah, rah! As if we girls didn’t
love this alpha part of the female body
enough, internationally renowned women’s
health writer and activist Rebecca Chalker
gives us the ultimate ode to our pleasure button
in this wonderful new book.
Part technical manual, part history and
wholly fen, The Clitoral Truth investigates,
demystifies and sings the praises of the most
misunderstood and maligned part of a womans
body. Illustrated by cartoonist and tattoo artist
Fish, it is an all-around joyous read.
You’ll finish The Clitoral Truth in one set
ting, armed with more ways to ensure your
ultimate sexual response. Now that’s not a bad
thing at all!

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack • Arista
ay writer/director Don Roos’ sophomore
slump following The Opposite of Sex might
have been a critical flop, but the sound
track is one of the year’s finest. The selec
tions, most of which feature female vocalists,
are appropriate for the film, which centers on
a young mother whose husband is killed in an
airplane crash.
The collection is especially appealing
because it combines hidden gems (Tara
MacLean’s “Divided” and Sister Seven’s
“The Only Thing T hat’s Real”) with recent
hits (Delerium’s “Silence” and Dido’s “Here
with Me,” the W B’s Roswell theme). This a
post-Lilith Fair representation of strong
women who aren’t afraid to fold pop and
electrónica into their songs.
Sixpence None the Richer— famous for
last year’s catchy but overplayed “Kiss Me”
— is represented twice here with a remix of
“Love” and with lead singer Leigh Nash’s
“Need to Be Next to You.” My favorite
track, by far, is a new version of Carly
Simon’s “Our Affair.”
The Bounce soundtrack also serves as an
economical sampler that undoubtedly will
lead listeners to discover a number of under-
appreciated artists. Morcheeba’s “Rome
Wasn’t Built in a Day” and Beth Orton’s
“Central Reservation (The Then Again
Version)” are two good examples.
A few guys give the collection a
more unisexual appeal. Among
them are Angie Aparo’s “Hush"
(yes, he’s a man) and techno
producer BT’s “Never Gonna
Come Back Down.”

Sony DVD
his collection of music videos is fell of fond
memories for most gay men, with 15-plus
years of Michael’s career represented. He is
a consummate singer and performer, and his
videos screamed gay sensibility (tight jeans,
leather jackets, trendy hairstyles, high fashion,
drag queens) long before he came out in a
West Hollywood bathroom.
And speaking of that indiscretion, you also
will get the uncut version of “Outside,”
Michael’s love song to the cop who arrested
him. With officers and bodybuilders kissing and
a bathroom that turns into a gay disco, it’s a
classic camp romp. The DVD also features
interviews and a discography.

Ithough not exactly a gay film, this classic musical is well-loved by queers every
where. And this two-disc set will make a perfect gift for any theater queen.
Not only do you get a fantastic widescreen image of the film, you also get
director commentary, Julie Andrews interviews, almost three hours of documentary
footage, music outtakes, storyboards, sketches, photos and much more. Plus, with
the captions on, you can practice for the Rocky Horror-like audience participation of
“Sing Along with The Sound of Music ” that’s all the rage for camp followers and
drag queens in London and New York— and coming soon in Portland. The Lonely
Goatherd says, “Buy it now!”
