I’ve asked someone who is from the

thought she could help, but this is
the interaction, word for word.
W ell, sort of.
ME: So, why shouldn’t we wear
white after Labor Day?
HER: Because you shouldn’t.
ME: W h y not?
HER: Because it is tacky.
ME: Why?
HER: Because it just is.
W ell, with that all cleared up, I
can die a happy rnan. So, I hope you
can see the reason for my problem

Ms. Behavior herself makes it a
practice never to wear white so as
not to be mistaken for a bride or a
virgin. But if you tan well (w hich
Ms. Behavior does n ot) and feel
compelled to show off, you might
not be able to resist wearing the
contrasting noncolor.
This can be forgiven, unless you
wear white shoes. (W h ite shoes in
general are a no-no unless you’re a
woman attending her own wedding.
Why, you might ask? Because white
shoes are dorky.)
Wearing white in general has its
hazards. First, if you drop something
on your white shirt, it won’t blend in.
Second, you can’t get away with
much perspiration in a white shirt.
Most importantly, o f course, white is
not slimming.
But none o f the above addresses
the seasonality issue you ask about.
T h e main reason for not wearing
white after Labor Day is so you
don ’t risk being mistaken for a
straight M iam i drug dealer, a male
nurse or a Palm Springs g o lf dandy.
But if you’re not concerned about
your image, there’s no reason to pay
attention to such stringent and
arbitrary fashion guidelines.
W h o ’s on your case, anyway?
Probably some shallow, underdevel
oped club queens who have to recy
cle their
wardrobes every
solstice so they
don’t risk
appearing out o f
vogue to other
shallow, under
developed club
queens.
So, Ms.
Behavior gives
you her permis
sion to break all
the fashion rules.
Live it up.
W ear socks

dals. W ear a
belt with your
suspenders.
If you don’t
have any clean black socks, wear the
nubby beige ones your aunt gave you
for Christmas. A n d wear a smile
when you sit alone on Saturday
nights, washing your hair and watch
ing the weekend television lineup.
D ear M s . B e h a v io r :
I recently was asked to resign from
a Christian gospel group I am heavily
involved in because it came to light
that I am indeed a butt pirate.
I’m not sure what to do. Crying for
two hours didn’t do anything.
Should I quit? Refuse to quit?
T h ey did break a nondiscrimina
tion clause in their constitution by
doing this. Should I picket outside our
next rehearsal?
I’m tom because I really enjoyed
this group, and taking judicial action
against them would...well, not be fun.
Your omniscience would be helpful
right now.

D ear S m u d g e :
D on’t allow these so-called
Christians to closet their unbrotherly
position. G et the media involved.
If you’re being forced to leave
your place o f worship, it would be
best to go out with a bang (preferably
on the church lawn). If reasonable
conversation gets you nowhere and
bad publicity doesn’t convince the
other congregants to turn the other
cheek on their homophobia, you
could pretend to offer to resign but
on the condition you’re allowed to do
a solo performance.
Th en come up with a series o f
songs expressing your position.
(T h in k o f it as “ T h e Sodomy
Medley.” )
Your friends surely will be able to
help you rewrite the lyrics to some
classic church tunes so worshipers
barely will remember that “ Amazing
Grace" didn’t previously include refer
ences to cocksucking and that “ A ve
Maria" isn’t about a drag queen. Then
find yourself a friendlier place to
spend your Sundays. j n
