There isn’t anything gay about
Artist Repertory Theatre’s new pro
duction of Ain’t Misbehavin’ except
in the sense that gay also means
happy and joyful. But this revue o f
the music o f Fats Waller, now playing
through Dec. 17, simply hursts with
energy and high spirits. All five mem
bers of the exceptionally talented cast
make their parts their own while m anag
ing to evoke the effervescent spirit o f the
Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and ’30s
in
Brenda Phillips possesses all the grandeur of an
Ethel Waters, while Quigley Provost Landrum
sizzles like a young Lena H om e. And the
delightful Lisa Stm m recalls Josephine Baker
at her wackiest as she practically leaps out of
her skin in excitement. The women are
matched equally by two dynamic men: Edward
M. Barker, whose smooth delivery recalls Billy
Eckstine in his prime, and Abduel Hall, who
has the energy o f both o f the N icholas Broth
ers rolled into one. The simple hut effective
costuming, lighting and set all conspire
together to delight under the expert pacing
o f director Jam es Earl Ray. Rarely does Port
land theater get this good. T he heat gener
ated by Ain’t Misbehavin’ is just the thing
to warm you up on a cold, dark autumn

night. C all 503- 241-1278 for ticket

The new indie ensemble piece What’s Cook -

gin traumas. A smorgasbord of extended fams—
Asian, Jewish, Latino and African American—
gather together at Thanksgiving to ask: Why do
we torture ourselves like this every year? The
Jewish clan has spawned a semicloseted lesbian
daughter (Kyra Sedgwick) who brings her honey
(Julianna Margulies) home for the holiday. They

serving breakfast in bed to the lesbian lovers was
almost worth sitting through the rest of it. The
short-attention-span style of editing and the cast
of more than 40 dinner guests make for shallow
dialogue and weak emotional impact, hut if you
need a film to make you feel better about your
own fam, this might do the trick.
