17-year-old was beaten in a parking lot and
the word “fag” was scratched on his car, the
Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports Oct. 24.
Authorities have not yet determined whether
the assault was a hate crime.
“Mainly, what was written on the car
could he a motive,” Hurst police Sgt. Steve
Moore said. “We
just don’t know at
this time.”
Police said they
do not know the
victim’s sexual ori
entation. He re
mains in good con
dition at Harris
Methodist H.E.B.
hospital in Bedford, a spokeswoman said.
The teen, an employee of C C ’s Coffee
House, was attacked minutes after the establish
ment closed. He suffered a broken nose and
numerous cuts and bruises.
He told investigators he met two teen-agers
in the coffee shop earlier that evening. They
invited him to a party after he got off work,
police said.
“He remembered walking out of the shop,”
Moore said. “Then, he met two other young
men in the parking lot, and that’s all he can
remember.”
After the assault, he drove home, where his
mother found him bleeding in a bathroom and
took him to the hospital. Police found a pool of
blood in the parking lot after his family called
authorities.
“It appears that someone slammed his head
into his car,” Moore said. “There were dents in
the car.”

core of why these civil rights laws exist: to keep
bigotry and bias out of employment decisions."
Although existing legal precedent says
employers cannot force people to conform to
rigid gender stereotypes, the A CLU goes further
by arguing the ban protects gender-variant peo
ple. The lawsuit, filed Oct. 23 in U.S. District
Court in Louisiana, seeks unspecified damages
as a result of lost wages and emotional distress.

Last year, after his supervisors learned he

“The anti-homosexual teachings of the
Roman Catholic Church have tragic conse

but in the lives of millions of God’s gay, lesbian,
bisexual and transgendered children around the
world,” said Mel White, co-founder of Soul-

Hundreds of people, including prominent
Catholics and civil rights leaders, will join
with Dignity/USA and Soulforce in silent
vigil as a persistent and visible presence
Nov. 13 outside the National Shrine of the
Immaculate Conception as bishops and dig
nitaries from all over the world gather to cel
ebrate Mass.
Those same people will return Nov. 14 for a
nonviolent protest and civil disobedience
against church policies of exclusion. Dignity/
U SA and Soulforce are demanding an apology
for the oppression the church has caused and the
establishment of a bishop’s committee to engage
in dialogue with sexual minorities.
Organizers anticipate this protest will culmi
nate in the arrest of more than 100 Catholics
and allies from myriad faith traditions. In a let
ter to members, Dignity/USA president Mary
Louise Cervone said, “Through our actions, we
are seeking an end to the teachings that demean
and exclude us from full participation in our
church as whole and holy people, without hav
ing to hide or deny who we are."
