Does this F our C leveland H igh T eachers I ssue S tatement ^ our Cleveland High teachers issued a state- I ment to the media recently accusing Port land Public Schools of encouraging and sup porting homosexuality. “Unfortunately, in try ing to indoctrinate students and staff into affirming and celebrating homosexual practices, the school district has gone far beyond the civil rights issue,” they say. The two-page statement includes a list of facts they say parents, students and the commu nity need to know, including: “the scientific facts refute the myth that homosexuality is genetically predetermined" and “no one has to be homosexual and anyone can change.” The letter calls for instructors to “come out" and tell the district that “enough is enough.” The teachers claim to have “scientific evidence” to share with others. To obtain a copy of the statement, e-mail a request to measure9info@yahoo.com. The letter does not speak directly about the Oregon Citizens Alliance’s Measure 9, but a spokesperson for the group, Committee of Concerned Educators, wrote Just Out in an e-mail message: “Please tell your readers that it’s all right to vote yes on Measure 9. It does not dis criminate against anyone.” “Measure 9 in no way threatens their jobs, HIV/ AIDS programs, school gay and lesbian clubs, the great writing of homosexuals or any thing else that is not specifical ly stated in the measure,” the group wrote. drown out the hatemongers. “They’re always outnumbered,” said Jennifer Laverdure of Radical Women. “There’s never as many right-wingers as there are people who oppose them.” Most of the Phelps followers quietly held signs with homophobic slurs written on them, but a couple of vocal local street preachers also showed up. Although the counterprotesters were discouraged from doing so, many started engaging in shouting matches with them.
