Hit ’em where it hurts
To t h e E d it o r :
I’m writing regarding the latest Oregon
Citizens Alliance onslaught, the Student Pro
tection Act.
When I was a child during the 1930s in the
Columbia Gorge, we had a neighbor, Mr.
Jones, whose favorite quotation was, “The
best way to attract someone’s attention is to
hit them in the pocketbook.” You no doubt
recall Nevada getting upset when the Nation
al Organization for Women boycotted the
state for refusing to ratify the Equal Rights
Amendment.
O C A members and other neo-Nazi types
have economic interests, small businesses, cor
poration management jobs, etc. I’m not familiar
with legal ramifications of boycotts in 2000, but
“hitting ’em in the pocketbook” remains an
effective tool.

I have a lot of respect for the journalism in
Just Out. That’s why 1 must comment on numer
ous errors in a story written by Andy Mangels in
the Sept. 1 issue.
In a story ironically titled “Overstepping
Bounds," Mangels writes about the controversy
between Don Horn, the managing director of
triangle productions!, and Steffen Silvis, the
theater critic for Willamette Week, who has
written unflattering reviews of Horn’s produc
tions. Silvis has also contacted philanthropic
organizations (like the Meyer Memorial Trust)
that have supported Horn to inquire about
their criteria for funding.
Mangels points'out that Horn and his lawyer
met with me to discuss Silvis, which is true and
which was reported earlier in the Portland Busi
ness Journal. He then writes, “Although Zusman
agreed some of the complaints have merit:—
including, according to a Business Journal article,
the point that Silvis overstepped hounds in call
ing the funding organizations—no examination,
article or apology has been published in the
paper to date.” Huh?
Mangels never called me in preparation for
his story. He never called Silvis.
And his reading of the Business Journal story
is dead wrong. That story clearly states, “Zus
man supports Silvis, who is the main theater
critic for the weekly,” and adds that I am per
fectly comfortable in having Silvis call funding
organizations.
I am accurately quoted as saying that it’s “not
inappropriate for him [Silvis] to call up [funders]
and identify why some theaters get money and
not [others].” Mangels is free to disagree with
Silvis and Willamette Week, but shouldn’t he
have checked his facts?

In the Sept. 1 article “Out on Stage,” it mis
takenly was reported in the story about triangle
productions! that Willamette Week editor Mark
Zusman felt Steffen Silvis had overstepped
bounds in calling the funding organizations
mentioned. In fact, Zusman was quoted in the
Business Journal as saying it was “not inappropri
ate” for Silvis to have called the various funding
sources. Just Out regrets the error.
