they would work for Pride Northwest in a non-
K>ard capacity, they doubt the Kiard would
allow them to be involved. “ I’m willing to do
whatever the community wants me to do,”

Calif., warning aK iut the folly o f supporting
Nader. It states that “any votes for Ralph Nader
will only serve to help elect G ov. Bush” and that
“A1 G ore is the only electable presidential can­
didate with a proven record o f support for the
goal o f ending prejudice in society.”

J Nader knocked a few more chinks in the
Democrats’ armor Aug. 25 when he shocked
even his own supporters by selling out the
Memorial Coliseum. The rally— his largest yet—
demanded his inclusion in the upcoming debates
and introduced Oregonians to his running mate,
Winona LaDuke, who was raised in Ashland.
During a press conference earlier in the day,
Nader blasted the “lesser of two evils” argument
used by most liberals who support the increas­
ingly moderate Democratic Party. “Every four
years, Kith parties will get lesser— and more
evil,” he said.
He went so far as to say defeat would be “the
best thing that could happen to the Democrats.
They have to wake up and say, ‘W hat are we
here for?’
A1 Gore is talking populist and walking
Republican, Nader said, calling the vice presi­
dent a legitimate political coward. He knows so
much and refuses to act on his knowledge. 1
mean, Bush can plead ignorance. Gore can’t.”
Condem ning bloated military budgets,
Nader rattled off a list of “the real weapons of
mass destruction we have to get a handle on"—
among them AIDS. LaDuke spoke of a future in
which all people can walk in peace regardless of
their sexual orientation.
Michael Perez, National Stonewall Demo­
cratic Federation co-chair, responded to the
Green Party ticket’s growing popularity in a
press release Aug. 15: “Nader’s record on the
issue of fairness for gay and lesbian Americans
was completely blank until he decided to run for
president. We welcome his recent support, but
this doesn t qualify him as leader in the fight for
gay and lesbian equality.”
The national organization of gay, lesbian,
protest will coincide with the premiere of
Dr. Laura Schlessinger’s controversial talk
show 11 a.m. Sept. 11 in front o f KGW-TV,
1501 S.W. Jefferson S t., near downtown Port­
land. Dem onstrations also are planned around
the country for Sept. 10 and 11.

advertisers to join the parade o f major compa­
nies distancing them selves from Schlessinger’s
radio program are autom aker Saab, RadioShack
and Motel 6. T h e Internet site has orchestrated
22 protests around the country involving tens of
thousands o f people.
