PABA President Mark Miller dines with Portland Police Chief Mark Kroeker
ly known for her disparaging comments about
gays and lesbians. A national campaign, Stop-
DrLaura.com, has called for advertisers to cancel
their support for the television show.
Many large sponsors continue to announce
they are pulling out, and some have canceled
their support of Schlessinger’s radio program,
too. Priceline.com, Gateway, Kroger’s/Texas,
EchoStar/DISH, Sears and the O hio State Lot
tery are the latest to drop out.
Brenda Buratti, K G W ’s program manager,
recently met with several citizens from the sex
ual minorities community who expressed con
cern about the upcoming show. Members of the
group said the gathering was productive.
But Buratti recently informed Bonnie Tin
ker, who attended the meeting, that the station
did not change its mind about airing the show.
Still, KGW promised it would not air any pro
gram with defamatory comments about any
group of people.
A protest will be held 11 a.m. Sept. 11 in
front of KGW, 1501 S.W. Jefferson St., near
downtown Portland. National demonstrations
also are planned around the country for Sept. 10
and 11.
StopDrLaura.com says it has had 40 millions
hits and 3 million unique visitors since
March 1. T h e group has orchestrated 22
protests around the country involving tens of
thousands of people.
Portlands demonstration likely will not he
Kroeker’s goals are numerous. But he
summed them up in a sentence: “I want Port
land to he the safest city in the U .S.”
Kroeker plans to continue to improve on
the city’s hands-on community policing. He
said although the concept has many defini
tions, at its core is working hand in hand with
neighborhoods to make life more peaceful for
everyone.
Kroeker didn’t miss the opportunity to do a
little recruitment during his 10-minute talk.
The bureau specifically is looking for people of
color and women.
Kroeker said the force has 33 African Amer
ican and 24 Latino officers, hut he wants it to
mirror the community. To do that, he said 65
African American and 40 Latino police officers
should he on the streets of Portland.
Women also are underrepresented, Kroeker
said. Portland police hope to have 270 women
on the force, up from just 169.
Kroeker reminded the audience that recruit
ment is open to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and
transgender communities. He said he requires a
unique mix from quality applicants: people who
have a heart to help others in need hut can
engage in gunfight and survive.
“I want you to join us in this great mission,"
Kroeker said. “I ask you to he involved.”
