of lineups, hut do check out Channel 99
on Portland-area A T & T cable for some totally
queer TV. A new national cable network,
C l T V is starting out slowly hut has ambitious
plans.
For now, it only has one hour of program
ming a week, Wednesdays from 10 until 11
p.m. A handful o f original programs rotates
throughout each month, including shows on
gay lifestyle, music videos and short films.
On July 2 6 , 1 caught an episode of W O W , a
half-hour magazine with pieces on travel, men’s
fashion and a Miami circuit party. It struck me
as a whole lot of fluff and not even especially
queer-centric. T he second half-hour was a
U SC student film called M eet Joe G ay, which
was an improvement over the previous show.
The slogan for the network is “the world
through your eyes,” which is fine if your eyes
reside in an affluent, toned, young, urban
NxJy— which seems to he the target audience.
The programming also appears more skewed to
gay men than lesbians, but perhaps that will
change.
Scheduled to air Aug. 9 is The Boys o f M am
Chester, an hour long look behind the scenes of
the popular British series Q ueer as Folk, which
debuts the following week in half-hour
episodes. Don’t he surprised if that isn’t what
you see, however, because the shows broadcast
July 26 bore no resemblance to the listings in
the publicity materials or on the Internet.

Festival at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 5 in Gresham will he
Patricia Barber, a phenomenal musician from
Chicago. With her third CD, modem cool, liv
ing up to its name— and earning the rarely
bestowed five stars from the jazz hihle, Doten-
beat, she is poised to release her latest record,
Nightclub.
Possessing a pure voice she can color in any
hue, Barber is a master stylist who also records
covers of songs such as “You and the Night and
the Music" and “Light My Fire.” But her own
lyrics are what stand out as thoughtful, insight
ful yet accessible poetry set to inventive
melody lines.

Portland. Christy Claxton shines
her btxtts in Austin, Texas, and is
on a massive tour to promote her
CD, Out of Nowhere.
From a sampling, she sounds
like a bluesy Ani Difranco wan
nabe with a good dose of country.

What a concept
ugene conceptual artist Mike E. Walsh has
gotten a lot of ink for his multimedia instal
lations exploring AIDS as a gay man.
His newest show— Aug. 8 through Sept. 3
at the A.N. Bush Gallery in Salem— is Aus
tralian Series: Fragile Circle, assemblages
inspired by a monthlong sojourn down under.
Composed of a wide array of materials, each
piece documents the universality of cultural
diversity.
