Hot off
the presses
A t first glance, Fabulous Hell seems to be
right-wing propaganda about how disgustingly
deviant and amoral gay men are. But the first-
person narration— quite the fad among young
N orth American novelists— quite literally
forces the reader to identify with the protago
nist, which in turn inspires sympathy with the
difficult choice of whether to drink and drug
oneself to death or have some dignity and a job.
Craig Curtis’ debut novel treats HIV/AIDS
rather lightly and tends to glamorize substance
use, if not abuse. But damn it if there isn’t
something really compelling about it! 1 liked
this book against my will and read it compul
sively into the wee hours.
Curtis’ prose is clear, precise and easy to
read without being simple— the way H eming
way wrote, some would say. A nd the story does
turn around in the end; gay life isn’t so bleak
and besotted after all.

Early in the book, one of the charac
ters is traveling in the U nited States and
remarks that talking to Americans makes him
feel his vocabulary is "embarrassingly large and
accurate.” W hile author A lan Hollinghurst
doesn’t overwhelm the reader with English
slang or 50-pence words, just enough of each is
present to preclude forgetting the setting.
Bom in 1954, Hollinghurst was elected to
the “Best of Young British Novelists” pantheon
in 1993— at the age of 39, which apparently
counts as “young” in the UK. This extratextual
tidbit further complicates the manifest story
line, which deals in large part with an inter-
generational romance between a 37-year-old
and a 22-year-old.
The Spell lives up to its name for about two-
thirds of its length; the remainder is less
entrancing than it is riveting, more like w atch
ing a plane crash than losing oneself in volup
tuous voodoo. A t 257 pages, it’s worth the
effort— especially if you need a lesson in letting
go of fear and engaging the world with aban
don.
