The Proffitt’s name is on 31 stores, and the Saks Fifth Avenue name is on 59 stores. The others bear names like McRae’s, Younkers, Parisian and Herberger’s. The company’s origin is a bit difficult to fol low, but here are the important parts: In 1987, Proffitt’s became a publicly traded company; in 1998, it purchased Saks Holdings and took the better-known Saks name. The new Saks, with its stores of many names, accounts for more than $6 billion in sales and ranks No. 267 in the Fortune 500. The company includes sexual orientation in its nondiscrimination policy, but it does not offer domestic partner benefits, according to spokesman Tom Coan. The benefits are being considered, however. “We included it on an associate survey that was sent out several weeks ago,” he says. “Before we do anything with the benefits, we look at a cross section of associates and their opinions.” The company discusses gay and lesbian issues in diversity training, but it does not have a gay and lesbian employee group. “I’m not really aware of any employee groups,” Coan says. "It’s just not part of the soci ology here.” Marketing is not aimed directly at the gay and lesbian community. Coan says nearly all of Saks’ marketing relies on two strategies. First, it sends advertis ing material to its existing customers. (Infor mation about customers’ product preferences is stored on computers, but a customer’s sexual orientation is not recorded.) Second, the com pany advertises in mainstream newspapers in order to reach a broad audience. : * VOICE PERSONAL ADS P age 57 Near SAFEWAY Near the Hollywood Theater • 2Ö07 • 2008 • 2009 • 2010 ••• 2000 • 2001 • 2002 • 2003 • 2004 • .. ■ • ■ ■ ■■ » JUST FRIEND 77>-O>C The’X Hollywood Vision Center 284-2000 Homes fora Lifetime ■••.■•■■••I 1 9900 S.
