Drag everyone you know
to see this flick
ith Flawless , gay director Joel Schumach-
er has created a film that redefines friend
ship, a film that portrays a transgendered
man with deep empathy and insight and yet
with the authentic campy humor often associat
ed with the world of drag queens. This is a film
about the unlikeliest of alliances, a bond that
grows between Robert DeNiro’s fag-hashing ex
cop, Walt, and Philip Seymour Hoffman’s lone
ly preoperative drag star, Rusty. This is a deeply
intimate character study that reveals volumes
about the power of compassion.

o you like your holiday cheer with wacky,
satirical twists? Then grab your favorite
snowman or snowgal and spend a fun
evening with Melinda and the Angels doing
/ts a Jingle Out There. The bad girls of Portland
comedy are hack with their skewed parodies,
such as “Hormones We Have Heard on High"
and "Trolling Through the Chat Rooms.”
The Angels wing it at the Scottish Rite
Center, 709 S.W. 15th Ave., Dec. 16 through
Dec. 26. Days and times vary; call

As Schumacher told Gay.com, both charac
ters are really the same person at their cores.
“They’re both shut down. Frightened, really.
They’re very defended and defensive,” the
director says. “W alt’s got his guy thing and
Rusty’s got his drag queens. Walt may be
homophobic, but Rusty’s heterophobic. They’re
both selfish, and when you’re selfish, you rob
yourself of your humanity.”
Both actors give Oscar-worthy performances
as they dance around the definitions of what it
means to he gay and straight men. Don’t miss
it!
