tedious pinings of an enamored male play
wright—all of whom have fallen for Essendine.
And why not, he’s handsome, a man of culture,
wildly successful, and queer. The story, set in
the late 1940s, predates contemporary concep
tions of sexuality.
Essendine seems never so ecstatic and at
peace as when he’s gifted a silk robe, one of
four in which he appears throughout the play.
From mirror to bar, Essendine and clan weave
piquant repartee. In an era of dumbed-down
cyberspeak, Present Laughter is a welcome joust
ing match of high wit and a scramble toward
an elusive serenity.
Present Laughter plays at Artists Repertory
Theatre, 1516 S.W. Alder St. in Portland,
through Dec. 19. Tickets are $15-$25. Call the
box office at (503) 241 -1278. — Lake Perriguey

Twinkies made me do it
n Nov. 28 at 8 p.m., the cable channel
Showtime presents Execution of Justice, a
film that tells the true story of the 1978
murders of San Francisco Supervisor Harvey
Milk, an openly gay civic and political activist,
and Mayor George Moscone.
The films stars Peter Coyote as Harvey Milk
and Tim Daly as the killer, Dan White. At the
ensuing trial White employed the infamous
“Twinkie defense.” This film explores whether
justice was served by the final verdict.
Bitter and sweet
D
yke rocker Meshell Ndeg^ocello sure has a
daunting name, but her musical style is as
pure and simple as a deep breath. She has
just released her third critically acclaimed
release, Bitter —which has been ironically
called “her most joy-filled work to date”—and
she’ll visit the Aladdin Theatre in Portland on
Dec. 9 to support it.
Sadly, many people know her only through
her work on a cover of Van Morrison’s “Wild
Night” with John Mellencamp a few years ago,
but Ndeg^ocello has an extensive, beautiful
repertoire to pull from. And she likes to rock
out on the bass. What more could you ask?
Tickets are available at the Aladdin The
atre box office (3017 S.E. Milwaukie Ave.) and
Ticketmaster outlets, or may be charged by
phone. They cost $18.50 in advance and $20
the day of the show.
