According to their
lawyers, the four men
are victims of a city pol
icy that does not allow
detained people to
receive
medications
unless they are trans
ferred to a hospital.
The plaintiffs are
seeking a court order
requiring the city to allow improved access to
prescription medications for detainees. They
also seek unspecified damages and legal fees.
According to police, the department is
already modifying its policy on inmate access to
medication under the terms of a settlement from
a 1992 case that made similar claims. The
changes include an agreement to make prescrip
tion drugs more easily available to detainees
awaiting arraignment.
The changes should be in effect by the end of
the year, said police spokesman Michael Collins.

T
he Rev. Mel White, a well-known gay min
ister, and 200 gay and lesbian Christians
met late last month with the Rev. Jerry Falwell
and 200 of his followers.
The purpose of the unprecedented meeting
was to attempt to reduce violent acts against
sexual minorities and Christians, according to
various media reports.
“We are here because innocent people of
various faiths, racial and ethnic groups, and sex
ual preferences have increasingly had their lives
abruptly and violently ended by people with
opposing views,” Falwell told the 400 delegates.
“This is the
first step in our
journey towards
re co n cilia tio n ,"
said White.
The two have
known each other
for years. Before
coming out as a gay
man, W hite ghostwrote FalwelPs autobiography.
Prior to the meeting, the groups had agreed
to disagree on whether gay men and lesbians can
be Christians. Instead, they focused on ways to
deter violence against Christians and sexual
minorities.
Falwell stressed that he has not changed his
belief that homosexuality is a sin.
The weekend concluded with a Sunday ser
vice at Falwell’s church. Preaching to all the del
egates, Falwell stressed God’s message of love.

Angry anti-gay protesters demonstrated out
side the church. They held signs and screamed
at gay and lesbian supporters as they entered the
church.

WYOMING
man convicted of murdering gay college
student Matthew Shepard will serve two
consecutive life terms in prison under a plea
agreement reached Nov. 4.
A day earlier, a jury found Aaron McKinney,
22, guilty of felony murder, kidnapping and
aggravated robbery in the slaying of Shepard last
year. The jury deliberated for 10 hours over two
days. It rejected the first-degree premeditated
murder charge.
According to The Associated Press, Shep
ard’s parents, Dennis and Judy, held hands and
looked ahead, expressionless, when the verdict
was read.
President Clinton, meanwhile, issued a state
ment praising the jurors’ decision.
“This verdict is a dramatic statement that we
are determined to have a tolerant, law-abiding
nation that celebrates our differences, rather
than deepening them," Clinton said. “We can
not surrender to those on the fringe of our soci
ety who lash out at those who are different.”
The following day, McKinney’s sentence was
announced in court by District Judge Barton
Voigt as the penalty phase of the trial was set to
begin.
The prosecution was seeking the death
penalty for McKinney.
Russell Henderson, the other man charged
in the murder, pleaded guilty in April to murder
and kidnapping. He was sentenced to two life
terms. Henderson has said he watched McKin
ney beat Shepard and did nothing to stop it.
On Nov. 1, Voigt ruled McKinney’s lawyers
could not employ a “gay panic” defense, saying
it was akin to temporary insanity or a dimin
ished-capacity defense— both of which are pro
hibited under Wyoming law.
According to the AP, a gay panic defense is
built on the theory that “a person with latent
gay tendencies will have an uncontrollable,
violent reaction when propositioned by a
homosexual.”
McKinney’s lawyers have said McKinney
flew into a drug-induced rage after a sexual
advance by Shepard triggered memories of trau
matic homosexual episodes during his youth.
Prosecutors, meanwhile, argued that McKin
ney and Henderson posed as gay, lured Shepard
out of a bar, drove him to a remote fence and
pistol-whipped him into a coma.
