Dec. 1. In his powerful site-specific installation
piece at Portland State University’s Littman
Gallery, Walsh focuses on the impact of AIDS,
especially in Oregon’s artistic community.
A complex, multimedia assemblage, Lest We
Forget includes a timeline of photographs and
biographies of Oregon dancers, actors and visu
al artists, which helps give a face to the pan
demic. Although a very personal work, this
installation is both informative and mysterious
as it examines the issue of mortality.
The show opens with a reception from 5 to
7 p.m. Nov. 4 and continues through Nov. 26.
The Littman Gallery is located at 1825 S.W.
Broadway; call (503) 725-5656 for gallery
hours.
How to find Tru North
uthor Janet McClellan, creator of the pop
ular lesbian novels featuring Detective Tru
North, gives a reading at 7 p.m. Nov. 5
from her new book, Windrow Garden. Her pre
vious bcx)ks are: K .C . Bomber, Penn Valley
Phoenix, River Quay and Chimney Rock Blues,
all part of her detective series, which is
informed by her 25-year career in the criminal
justice system. McClellan recently moved to
the Oregon coast, and her appearance at It’s
My Pleasure (3106 N.E. 64th Ave.) will be her
first in Portland.

Her new book is a departure— it’s a
romance set in Kansas featuring two women in
their 30s. Gardening metaphors abound in the
story; as for the title of her new book, McClel
lan explains: “Windrows are trees and when
properly placed provide shelter and care for a
home.” McClellan does intend to write more
love stories, and she’s leaning toward some
thing set in her newly adopted home.
Fun with orbs

week of royal festivities begins Oct. 20,
when the Imperial Sovereign Rose Court
holds the Harmony of the Rose Awards
Dinner at Darcelle XV, 208 N.W. Third Ave.
in Portland, starting at 7 p.m. A wide array of
events leads up to the coronation, including a
river cruise Friday night on the Portland Spir
it. Below decks you can enjoy a drag show fea
turing performers from other realms; above
decks you can dance the night away— all
indoors, so don’t let any Oregon weather keep
you away.
The main event, the crowning of a new
emperor and empress, takes place Saturday,
O ct. 23, at the Melody Ballroom, 615 S.E.
Alder St in Portland. Funds raised will benefit
various local gay and lesbian charities. A lively
time is promised, despite this admonition from
the ISRC brochure:
“Live animals, confetti
Mike E. Walsh’s
and open flames are
Lest We Forget
not permitted.” (Open
flamers are another
story, and undoubtedly
are encouraged.)
No fewer than five
parties ensue after the
coronation and
through the following
day. Stamina is a
must!

Lesbian laves
a rave and a riot
ebecca Riots, a folksy, feminist trio from
the Bay area, marches into Portland Oct.
,29 to play the Snake & Weasel (1720 S.E.
12th Ave.)— and they’ve got a nationwide
army of critics to back them up. From Balti
more to Telluride, Rebecca Riots has been
dubbed the “best band with a conscience” and
“fresh, radical folk musicians.”
Listening to the savvy lyrics and grainy
acoustics of their first album, Some Folks, you
might agree the critics are right on target. The
band covers issues like body oppression, home
lessness, gay rights and police brutality, all in a
harmonious blend of easy-to-swallow musical
styles. Also, despite their political devotion,
Eve Decker, Andrea Prichett and Lisa Zeiler
know how to please the ladies. In the song
“How I Feel," the singers croon: “ ’Cause how I
feel / is like a river that’s running / running
wild into her arms."
The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are
$10 at the door. Call (503) 232-8338 for more
information.
