What’s refreshing is that at his tender age, he isn’t just focused on sex (perhaps because he lives with his sister) but wants to find a genuine love relationship. Basically this is a frothy holiday confection, with an ending as sweet as a candy cane. (OG) The dueling duo from Sunday Afternoon oys in Shorts’’ is the title for a night of short films about, what else, men. One of the shortest is also one of the best. Don’t head out for popcorn during Sun­ day Afternoon, or you’ll miss a witty, highly original take on communication. This won derful little gem tran­ scends gender and makes a universal statement about what we really mean when we open our mouths to talk, talk, talk. All that can be said is it’s based on the true story of a famous recent hate crime that did not take place in Wyoming. Perhaps my luke­ warm reaction was a result of previewing a film with a definite Christmas theme on a ninety-friggin’-two degree day. If you can get past the cutesy premise— that a young gay adult male writes to Santa asking for a boyfriend— then there are aspects of the film worth noting. The performances and the production values are about average for a queer flick, meaning it looks like a low- budget straight film. But there are some fine scenes that capture the angst of young love and the complexity of relationships within an extended family.
