P orn on the R un brouhaha has ensued over a recent police crackdown on Seattle adult video arcades. T he Seattle Gay News says during the past several m onths it has received numerous reports from gay men who charge they have been victimized under a city ordinance that, according to the paper, claims “ ‘unprotected sexual activities in public places’ was con tributing to a ‘public health hazard’ and ‘infor mation shows that such activities occur’ in the adult boutiques, making the ordinance neces- ft sary. SG N reports Seattle City Councilmember Tina Podlodowski, an out lesbian and chair of the Public Safety Com m ittee, defended the A recent crackdown saying it was a “public health measure” designed to stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. She was part of the council that unani mously approved the ordinance two years ago. In the April 2 issue of SG N, Podlodowski said, “I do believe that the city has an interest in regulating what happens in Seattle’s busi nesses, especially when it comes to public health and safety. I do not believe that this regulation is anti-gay.” But others beg to differ. Seattle attorney Gil Levy told SG N the “peep show” laws are aimed at gay men. “These are, like sodomy laws, specifically designed to harass gay men. This is their sole purpose, they have no other function,” he charged. 2100 NE Broadway, Quite 1-B Portland, OR 9 7 2 3 2 n — ô » !• ▼Office 5 0 3 -2 8 7 -8 9 8 9 x l2 2 ▼Cellular/pager 3 3 0 -H 0 M E (4 8 6 3 ) ▼ O U T of the area?...
