The event celebrates the life of Abele, who helped found Phoenix Rising, one of the few counseling centers nationwide specifically designed to serve the needs of sexual minorities. Jawea Mockabee, Phoenix Rising’s fund development director and chair of this year’s event, says more than $3,000 was raised via the silent auction that preceded the dinner. “I’m totally impressed with the community’s response for donations of items,” she says. “Local businesses and artists were quick to answer the call, and we are grateful for their generosity in supporting this fund raiser." Proceeds from the dinner will support the Sexual Minority Youth Recreation Center, a drop-in center for queer youth. For more infor mation about SM YRC, call 872-9664. R T P and BRO M erger T a N o G o he Right to Pride board has voted to con tinue as an independent organization com mitted to political and legislative advocacy on behalf of gays, lesbians and bisexuals in Oregon. Katherine Tennyson, co-chair of RTP, says her group wanted to explore the possibility of a merger between RTP and Basic Rights Oregon, but the organization could not come to a meet ing of the minds regarding the end result of a consolidation. “RTP will look for ways to work cooperative ly with Basic Rights Oregon to further our mutual goals, however, a merger just did not make sense at this time,” Tennyson says. RTP is Oregon’s oldest gay rights organiza tion. It has been active in Oregon politics for more than 15 years. ■ Compiled by INGA SORENSEN
