Don’t vote for Roberts To the E ditor , I am queer and a union member. Oregon Public Employees Union, to be exact. I volun teer on the political committee of OPEU, the statewide committee that decides which politi cal candidates will best serve working Oregonians. I can guarantee you that OPEU, like many unions in 1998, took queer rights into consideration when considering what working Oregonians need and deserve. Why? Because OPEU recognizes that union rights are queer rights, and queer rights are union rights. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice every where.” For this reason I was appalled to see Jack Roberts (incumbent candidate for labor com missioner) on your list of endorsements. Did you interview him? Easier yet, did you give a call to Bureau of Labor and Industries employees? They would tell you what they have learned about Jack Roberts as l^bor commissioner: He is no friend to unions. He is no friend to working Oregonians. His opponent, Mike Fahey, served a term as representative and proved himself a leader of progressive Oregonians. I suggest that you do a little more research into your endorsements, and I urge Just Out readers to vote for Mike Fahey despite your recommendation. E ve L yons Portland Enemies off transsexuals E ditor , Just Out has endorsed Jack Roberts for Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and To the Industries—the same Jack Roberts who, as BOLI commissioner, testified to Oregon legisla tors last year to urge removal of transsexuals from Oregon’s law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of disability. Contrast Roberts’ despicable behavior to that of his opponent for the position, Rep. Mike Fahey. Fahey took an active role in the struggle to preserve our civil rights and proved himself a friend to Oregon transsexuals by applying pres sure to BOLI to investigate our complaints of discrimination. Just Out has also endorsed the following rep resentatives who voted in favor of Senate Bill 44, which removed transsexuals from the state law requiring employers to make reasonable accommodation for the disability of transsexual ism: the 4th District’s Terry Thompson, the 8th District’s Ryan Deckert, the 15th District’s Randall Edwards, the 23rd District’s Kurt »PRIMARY PRIMER Just out OREGON PHIMIIIIY ’911ENDORSEMENTS This is not a mail-in election. In addition, Just Out endorsed John Kitzhaber for Governor, despite the that fact he signed into law a bill restricting the civil rights of transsexuals. There is no excuse for Just Out’s endorse ment of these enemies of transsexuals. None. M argaret D eirdre O’H artigan Acting Director, The Filisa Vistima Foundation Editor’s note: Jack Roberts has been a doing a good job at BOLI and he is good on gay and lesbian issues. Frankly, we need Republican allies and Roberts is that to us. We have endorsed Rep. Mike Fahey in all his races for state representative and think he would do a fine job as BOLI commissioner, but Just Out does not do dual endorsements.
