In the first flush of gay and lesbian liberation, coming
out and creating community institutions were primary issues.
Then came AIDS, which completely reordered many people's

priorities. Community awareness about queer youth began to
increase in the late 1980s as young people started coming out
earlier. And now we are beginning to see some focus on gay
men and lesbians at the other end of the age spectrum—par
ticularly as activists from the Stonewall era begin to grow
older.
